A downhill race under the banner of the 2029 World Cup candidacy

14.12.2023

The first Val Gardena/Gröden downhill on Thursday unfolded against a dreamlike backdrop: freshly snow-covered Dolomite peaks, impeccable slope conditions on the Saslong, and a brilliant blue sky combined to create a beautiful scene possibly unparalleled worldwide.

The organizers of the Saslong Classic Club showcased themselves on Thursday with unique shots broadcast globally from Val Gardena/Gröden. The downhill marked the inaugural speed race of this year's World Cup winter after numerous cancellations in recent weeks, drawing even more attention than usual.

Val Gardena/Gröden's bid for the Alpine World Ski Championships in 2029 was prominently featured during the downhill, with signs and banners advertising the candidacy displayed in the start area. As athletes passed under an arch reading "CANDIDATE 2029" at the entrance to Ciaslat, it became unmistakably clear to all spectators, both on-site and in front of screens: this unique course wants to be the venue for the 2029 World Championships.

The FIS Executive Board will decide on awarding the World Championships on Tuesday, June 4, 2024, at the FIS Congress in Reykjavik. Alongside Val Gardena/Gröden, Soldeu (Andorra) and Narvik (Norway) are also vying for the 2029 Alpine World Championships.
