All's well that ends well!

A fog bank was quite persistent in the upper section, so that the second downhill training had to be interrupted several times today. It took more than three hours to have all racers at the finish. The fastest athlete today was Austrian Matthias Mayer, ahead of the Canadian Benjamin Thomsen and Otmar Striedinger.

A quarter of an hour later than planned, at 12:30 pm, the second downhill training was opened today by the Norwegian Aleksander Aamodt Kilde. The first interruption was made after six racers followed by another much longer one after racer number 11; and Kjetil Jansrud was waved with the yellow flag in front of the fog bank not being able to conclude his run.

Only after about an hour could the race be resumed. In the meantime, it was debated to let racers only ski to the Super G-start, so that combined with yesterday’s training, each skier would have had a complete training run. This is a prerequisite for Saturday’s downhill race.

Luckily, the fog bank somewhat cleared in the meantime and the training could be continued. As the fastest in the training Austrian Matthias Mayer finished after 1:58.64 minutes. “Clocking the best training time was a surprise for me. In Val Gardena/Gröden, as we know from the past, everything is always possible - even with higher starting numbers” says Mayer. Benjamin Thomson from Canada came second after Mayer, followed by two more Austrians: Otmar Striedinger and Max Franz. Werner Heel, the best Italian, finished the training, as yesterday, in fifth place.

The results of the second training run can be found here.
