A vision for the people who will welcome the world in 2031

15.10.2026

Preparations for the 2031 Alpine World Ski Championships in Val Gardena are in full swing, with more and more concrete projects taking shape. A successful example is the Saslong Classic Club’s collaboration with the CAS Sport Management programme at the University of St. Gallen: six students have developed a comprehensive volunteering concept for the World Championships.

How can volunteers be recruited for the 2031 World Championships? Where can they be reached, what will motivate them to take part, and in which areas can they contribute their skills? These were some of the questions explored by Jürgen Schrapp, Dominic Kuen, Ernst Erb, René Läuchli, Jamal Othman and Adrian Wyss. This year, the Saslong Classic Club was a project partner of the continuing education programme at the University of St. Gallen.

The students examined the entire volunteer journey, from initial contact and registration through to preparation and participation in the event. Their concept also included proposals for a digital journey with a dedicated app, attractive volunteer benefits and a Volunteer Village as a place to meet, connect and share experiences.

Ambassadors and hosts for Val Gardena

One central idea runs through the concept: volunteers are ambassadors and hosts. They help shape the guest experience, convey the event’s values and make people from around the world feel welcome in Val Gardena.

The vision therefore extends beyond the World Championships. The aim is to build a large, engaged community and encourage volunteers to return for future editions of the Val Gardena Ski World Cup. Shared experiences, recognition and a sense of belonging should create a lasting connection with the event.

The six students presented their excellent work in an engaging and lively presentation. For the Saslong Classic Club, the concept provides valuable ideas to support preparations for the 2031 World Championships and the development of its volunteering programme.

The Saslong Classic Club warmly thanks Jürgen Schrapp, Dominic Kuen, Ernst Erb, René Läuchli, Jamal Othman and Adrian Wyss for their outstanding work, commitment and fresh perspectives. A special thank you also goes to Christian Lang, Head of the CAS Sport Management programme, who made this project possible.
