In Val Gardena/Gröden everything is ready for the 54th Saslong Classic with audience

14.12.2021

The long wait for the renowned speed classics on the Saslong has come to an end. On Friday, December 17, a Super-G will be held at the Alpine Ski World Cup in Val Gardena/Gröden, followed by the absolute highlight of the top-class South Tyrolean winter sports event on Saturday, December 18 with the downhill. After an intensive preparation phase, nothing stands in the way of an athletic fireworks display that spectators will be able to witness again this year.

Some of the world's best downhill skiers have been in Val Gardena/Gröden since the weekend and will complete their first training runs on the Ciampinoi course on Monday and Tuesday. The first official training on the Saslong is scheduled for Wednesday, December 15. And again on Thursday, Dominik Paris, Vincent Kriechmayr & Co. will have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the idiosyncrasies of the Val Gardena/Gröden downhill course - version 2021 - as part of the second training run, before things get real for the two races on Friday and Saturday. Super-G and downhill both start at 11:45 a.m. and that's also the start time of the two training sessions on the days before.

"We are ready for this big challenge. Organizing this year's event was incomparably more difficult than last year. This is because, in contrast to 2020, everything is open this year and normal skiing operations are also running at full speed - but it is still necessary to comply with all safety measures and to shield the FIS squad as best as possible. However, we are prepared and are looking forward - not only to the many top athletes, but also to the spectators who will once again be able to follow the races up close," says Rainer Senoner, president of the organizing Saslong Classic Club. The media interest in the South Tyrolean World Cup event is also great. Over 220 media representatives have been accredited for one of the most renowned winter sports events in Italy.

It is not only the media that want to be up close and personal on the last weekend before Christmas when the best skiers of the world plunge down the superbly prepared Saslong. Spectators are also eager to follow the racing action on-site again after a year's absence due to the pandemic. Tickets for the 54th Saslong Classic are still available, both for the super-G on Friday, December 17, and for the downhill on Saturday, December 18. They can be purchased exclusively online on the official website www.saslong.org/tickets.

Due to the current situation in the midst of the COVID pandemic, increased security regulations are in effect in Val Gardena/Gröden to protect athletes, staff and spectators. Only fans who can provide proof of “2G” and are therefore either vaccinated against Covid-19 or have recovered from it will be admitted. In the entire spectator area, the wearing of a protective respiratory mask is mandatory and there are no hospitality areas.
