Val Gardena to host a third World Cup race this years
Like last year, three men's World Cup races in the speed disciplines are on the program as part of the Saslong Classic. One of the two canceled races of the Matterhorn Cervino Speed Opening will be made up for on Thursday, December 14 in Val Gardena/Gröden.
This make-up race marks the start of the 56th Saslong Classic, which traditionally takes place on the last weekend before Christmas. On Friday, December 15th, the Super-G will take place at the foot of the Sassolungo before the South Tyrolean World Cup classic concludes with the downhill on Saturday, December 16th. The two training runs have been brought forward by one day and scheduled for Tuesday, December 12 and Wednesday, December 13. Representatives of the International Ski and Snowboard Federation FIS, the organizing committee and the coaches of the participating national teams will meet for the first team captains' meeting on Monday, 11 December.
"We have worked very hard in Zermatt and Cervinia over the past few weeks and have done everything in our power to ensure that the downhill races can take place there. Unfortunately, the weather has thrown a spanner in the works. If we are now able to make up for this race here in Val Gardena, then we will do so in memory of our friends at the Matterhorn Cervino Speed Opening. The Saslong Classic Club stands up for skiing and proves once again that it can also respond to last-minute requests. We would like to thank the FIS, the Italian Winter Sports Federation FISI, rights holder Infront and all other partners involved for their trust," said Rainer Senoner, President of the organizing Saslong Classic Club, in an initial statement.
